Listening Through Cyberspace

Is this madness helping us listen more or is it distracting us from listening?

Are we becoming more socially available or are we creating a wall in front of our actual physical and emotional being?

Do social networks help expose our personalities or do they end up being a virtual mask, used as an alternative to a handshake or a face to face conversation?

How do we keep our own uniqueness if each one of us is just a face on Facebook?

[Now, what should I log onto first: Blackboard, Webmail, Facebook, Blogger, Twitter, or Gmail? Hmm..please text your opinion]

  1. first off, let me say that you must have had some blogging experience before this assignment because this is a good blog, very provoking and straight to the point. :)

i agree with your view here. all of these networking sites, i think, are going to cause more harm than help. we are becoming too available, and its not just the networking sites but also all the new technology. for example, my mom was given a blackberry for her job, now she works 24 hours a day because they have infinite contact with her.

now, my biggest problem with these sites, which you hit upon is the fact that you build a wall as to who you really are, no one can see you behind your computer screen. people will use the internet to turn themselves into whoever they want to be. their actually being is completely separate from their cyber space being. I believe it creates a virtual mask, and everyone to some extent uses their computer to hide something about them or to enhance their real personality.

uniqueness is tough these days because there are so many people in the world, its hard to stand out a lot of the times. now dont get me wrong everyone is unique in their own way, its just harder to visually see. i cant think of a direct answer to the last question, so ill have to think it over and get back to you on that.
